Nuremberg, Germany – January 18, 2010. MEN extends its most successful product range 3U CompactPCI by another single-board computer to underline its competencies in this technology area. The most outstanding feature of the F11S: it is the first CompactPCI board with both Intel Atom and FPGA!
Unique Combination: Intel Atom and FPGA on CompactPCI
The F11S is MEN’s newest SBC based on 3U CompactPCI. MEN is the first manufacturer to bring a CompactPCI board onto the market which is based on Intel Atom and FPGA. This combination opens up completely new and extremely flexible solutions to the user.
Depending on the needs, the board can be equipped with different versions of the new Intel Atom XL processors, which offer a maximum power dissipation of 7 Watts at a speed of up to 1.6 GHz. In combination with a specially developed heat sink, the F11S can be operated in the extended temperature range of -40 up to +85°C.
The standard front I/O includes a COM interface via D-Sub, two USB 2.0, graphics via VGA or UXGA and a PS/2 interface for connection of a keyboard or a mouse. Further interfaces are a Gigabit Ethernet slot via PCI Express x1 and an FPGA-based Fast Ethernet slot on RJ45 connectors.
In order to be able to meet the requirements of the respective application as best as possible, the onboard FPGA allows the implementation of additional customer-specific interfaces, such as serial interfaces, CAN bus, binary I/O, protocol converters or touch controllers. In addition, up to 3 SA-Adapters for additional I/O can be placed on the F11S. Depending on the number of adapters, the card occupies 8 HP or 12 HP in the system.
The memory configuration of the F11S can also be varied very flexibly. Up to 2 GB soldered DDR2 SDRAM, 2 MB SRAM, a CompactFlash card and a MicroSD card slot are available for the user’s application. The F11S is completed by a board management controller for temperature and power supervision. The Phoenix Award BIOS is adapted to every application.
Around the Embedded Globe
The combination of the flexible and space-saving FPGA, the low-power Atom processors and Windows as a standard OS make the F11S especially suitable for all kinds of mobile applications.
The board is already used in automatic train control applications where features like operability in the extended temperature range and a minimum availability until 2014 are a must-have.
The board’s low power dissipation makes it suitable for infotainment applications. All components are soldered against shock and vibration in mobile applications and coated for protection against dust and humidity.
MEN Mikro Elektronik – Profile and Mission
Since its foundation in 1982 our company designs and manufactures failure-safe computer boards and systems for extreme environmental conditions in industrial and safety-critical embedded applications. Our mission is to provide innovative solutions while maximizing reliability and flexibility.
With over 200 employees and subsidiaries in France and the USA we have an annual revenue of around 30 million Euros with an export share of about 50%. Customized solutions make for more than half of our revenue. In addition the standard product range includes far more than 100 different computer boards with Intel and PowerPC with the corresponding BIOS, BSP and driver software, manifold I/O boards and completely configured systems based on:
▪ ESMexpress, ESMini and ESM Computer-On-Modules
▪ 3U and 6U CompactPCI, CompactPCI PlusIO, CompactPCI Serial and VMEbus
▪ PMC, XMC and M-Modules as system-independent mezzanine I/O standards
▪ Rugged Ethernet Switches
▪ Box Computers and Display Computers
The consistent use of FPGA technology gives us high flexibility when configuring customized and standard products.
Our products are used worldwide as control, measuring, test or simulation computers in all kinds of embedded applications. These are extremely safety-critical mobile markets like railway, buses , agricultural machines, commercial vehicles, avionics and shipbuilding as well as other mission-critical applications. Computer systems in such applications are in operation up to 24 hours every day and often need to be available for 10 years and longer. Ideally no failures must occur to avoid costly downtimes of machines or danger to human life.
We are certified to EN 9100:2003 (aerospace), IRIS (railway), ISO 9001:2000 (quality management) and ISO 14001:2005 (environmental management) in order to meet the severe quality requirements in critical applications and to offer our customers the highest quality in products and services while considering environmental protection and occupational safety on the basis of a recognized quality management system.
Our aim is to constantly improve and to provide the highest technology and innovation level. Our business ethics is determined by the principles of the United Nations’ Global Compact Initiative (human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption).
